Modern Prairie Roots

This new build was designed with connection in mind, an open, welcoming layout that encourages movement and mingling. Inspired by prairie-style architecture, the home balances grounded materials with transitional touches, creating a space that feels both timeless and fresh.
Durability and warmth were key drivers in material selection. Hickory hardwood flooring anchors the home with its rich tonal variation, offering a versatile base for furniture and decor. Coordinating marble tile was used in the bathrooms and fireplace surround, with the surround leaning warmer to echo the hickory tones and stained wood mantle. Faux wood beams (not pictured) were added to the living room ceiling for added character and architectural rhythm.
To maintain a balanced palette, a medium taupe wall color was selected - neither too gray nor too tan - offering a timeless backdrop that complements both warm and cool accents. In the kitchen, the island stain matches the fireplace mantle, while the perimeter cabinets were painted a soft, light tone that resists fingerprints and adds subtle contrast. A stone backsplash ties the palette together, pulling in cooler tones while harmonizing with the warmth of the wood.
Black accent lighting throughout adds a modern edge, while honoring the home’s transitional prairie roots. In the primary bathroom, the same cabinet color and hardware were repeated for cohesion, and a large onyx shower system was selected for durability and ease of maintenance.
